Chocolate Box Villages!

On a road trip with Maddie on board for the next three days.

Mother and daughter at Castle Combe.

Getting away from the wonderful hospitality of Gerda's family was difficult but we did eventually hit the road before midday. A short stop for some supplies and then we tackled the M4 with the village of Castle Combe our first stop.

Castle Combe takes its name from the 12th century castle that stood a short distance from the town. It is famous now as a tourist destination - being one of the beautiful villages of England. Many film companies have used the town as a backdrop to their story - the most recent was War HorseWe took some time to wander around the village admiring the way the village has been preserved over the centuries.

The classic shot at Castle Combe.
Equally impressive street scrapes.
More views.
Market square.

From one chocolate box village we headed down the road to another, Lacock. This whole village is considered a Natioal Trust site. Again, the whole village is one enormous tourist destination. We arrived late in the afternoon so the car parks were emptying so the village was easy to wander around. Again,  the village is used by many film production companies, in particular many BBC dramas have been filmed here.

The old George Inn in Lacock.

An internal garden and restaurant.
More of Lacock.

The day was running out on us a little so we set our sights on our overnight stop at Swineford, just a little way from Bath.

Hot air balloons over our overnight stop.
